Story 3: The Preacher has a Son

Years passed since the last time we saw the preacher. He decided to stay with a widowed woman that he met in the first story. They began to live together and soon after had a son. The preacher began to teach the word of God again but also still took leave from time to time to deal with bandits and the like in nearby areas. He also saved his now hometown a couple times since his stay began. As the child that they had began to grow, he became very strong for his age and was as healthy as an ox. This was not what was usual for this time and in this town. In recent years the town had been plagued with the deaths of many of the newly born infants. This terrible situation was felt in many of the families. One that had been plagued by this infant death syndrome more than any others was Martha DeVill.

Martha, ever since she was a child, always loved little children. When she was small she loved to play with dolls and spent most of her time talking like they were hers. She would feed them, change them, and do other things like read to them. As she grew older she would volunteer to watch children for families and would help in the church with taking care of children during the service. She married young like many did and immediately began trying to have kids. No matter how many times she tried she would always end up with her young child dying. This hardened her heart and made her angry with the world. This hatred only intensified when she saw that only on their first try at having children, the preacher and his wife were able to have a perfect and healthy young boy. Out of options and hating the world, she began to look for ways to help her in having children. She read many books and one day came across a passage in a Satanic journal. It was a spell of how to summon a demon. She thought that if she could summon this demon to her, she could make a deal to ensure she would have a child.

Martha went home and began to put together the spell. The demon appeared in a flash of black fire. “Who summoned me to this place and what are their reasons?” screeched the demon. Martha with fire in her eyes told the demon she had and that she demanded he allow her to have a child of her own. The demon laughed at the request, thinking how crazy this human was to try and command him. Then the demon realized where  he was and had heard of the preacher and how he had been spreading good throughout the land. He thought to himself and told Martha,“I will give you a child, perfect in every way you would want, but you must accomplish a task for me.”

“What is it that you shall have me do?”asked Martha.

The demon replied, "You must take the willing spirit away from the preacher of this town. Take his new child and kill him and that life will then be renewed in your baby.”

After this the demon vanished and Martha knew what she must do.

That evening Martha put on a black coat with a hood and went out to steal the baby away from the preacher’s home. She snuck into the child’s room through the window and seized the child. The only mistake she made when she was doing this is that she left the window cracked as she rushed out and went toward the wilderness outside of the town. As fate might have it the preacher could not sleep very well that night and decided to go and sit in the baby’s room. When he opened the door he saw the open window and the empty crib. Immediately he ran to get his pistol and coat then rushed outside. He could see some tracks leading from the window and followed them outside of town. He soon came across Martha. She was raising the child above her head about to smash him on the ground. At that moment the preacher raised up his pistol told Martha to stop what she was doing. Startled she looked over at him and in her eyes the preacher could see a part of the demon working inside of her. He knew that she was not going to stop until the child was dead so with a swift pull of the trigger he shot Martha. He moved so quickly afterwards that he caught the baby before he hit the ground. The demon had not succeeded in his plot.

Author’s Notes

This week I decided to try and keep my theme for the semester going and continue my stories of the west and the preacher. It was kind of difficult after my last story I didn’t really know where to go with the story. After reading this week's stories I was really left not knowing what direction to take. So, I decided to have the preacher make a stay in the town we last saw and work from that. I really enjoyed the story of Krishna this week and one story that stuck out to me more than any others was the one with the demon pretending to be a family friend and trying to kill Krishna. Of course, her attempt was futile and in the end she was killed by the child. I did not want the child in this story to become a larger character than the preacher so naturally I couldn’t give him any special powers either. The preacher in fact doesn’t have any special powers really unless he is in contact with this golden gun. So, I changed the story to have the same basic background but different twists to it. There is still a demon trying to kill a child. There is still someone dying. The changes really shine through the fact that the preacher must save the baby and that the demon wasn’t the one exactly trying to kill the baby.
